Concrete and sidewalk repair in Manhattan

Narrow frontages, heavy foot traffic and landmark district rules. Harlem, Washington Heights, the Upper West Side and more.

Our office is on Edgecombe Avenue in Harlem, so Manhattan is home ground. Uptown blocks combine some of the oldest sidewalks in the city with the heaviest foot traffic, and a large share of the borough sits inside historic districts where the work has to respect the streetscape.

Sidewalk conditions in Manhattan

Manhattan walks fail for a few reasons in particular. Mature street trees along the avenues and side streets lift flags from underneath. Cellar doors, vault lights and utility hardware set into the sidewalk create hardware defects the DOT inspects for. And the constant foot traffic means a trip hazard in Manhattan is noticed, reported and cited faster than almost anywhere else in the city.

Working in historic districts

Parts of Harlem, Hamilton Heights and the Upper West Side are designated historic districts. Sidewalk work in front of a landmarked building may need to match existing materials or finishes, and in some locations bluestone or hexagonal pavers rather than standard concrete. We check the designation before quoting so the work is done correctly the first time.

Access and scheduling

Manhattan frontages are narrow and parking for equipment is limited, so jobs are planned around access. Concrete is typically delivered and placed in a single visit for a residential frontage, with the area barricaded while it cures. We coordinate with building management on commercial and multi-family properties so entrances stay usable.
